There’s big news for local pollinators! The City of Salisbury’s Sustainability Advisory Committee (known as the Green Team) has received a $20,000 grant to expand pollinator habitat efforts within the city. This funding will support a coordinated initiative to increase public education, engagement, and visibility of pollinator demonstration sites across our community.
Pollinators like bees and butterflies are essential to healthy ecosystems and food production, yet their populations are declining. This project aims to reverse that trend locally by creating new native pollinator gardens and meadows on city-owned, business-owned, and residential properties. These sites will be tracked through a revitalized Lower Shore Pollinator Habitat Certification program led by Lower Shore Land Trust.
In a recent press release, Mayor Randy Taylor shared that the initiative reflects the City’s commitment to sustainability, noting, “By expanding habitats like these, The City of Salisbury is not only supporting biodiversity but also creating greener, healthier spaces for our residents.”
The effort is made possible through partnerships with Lower Shore Land Trust, Wicomico Public Library, Habitat for Humanity of Wicomico County, Assateague Coastal Trust, Fenix Youth Project, the Salisbury Zoo, and Interfaith Partners for the Chesapeake.
If you’re feeling inspired to create or improve pollinator habitat at your home, now is the perfect time! Native plant sales are happening through early May at:
