WET was thrilled to welcome students from Horizons Delmarva for a hands-on environmental education event at Waterside Park earlier this week. Horizons Delmarva provides a transformative Summer Enrichment Program for low-income students in Wicomico County, helping to develop the whole child through academics, arts, and outdoor exploration.
This marks the second summer WET has partnered with Horizons Delmarva, a program that's opening doors and sparking curiosity for local youth. During the event, students learned about the power of trees and buffers in protecting our waterways. Dan Savoy, a former science supervisor for Wicomico Public Schools and a WET board member, demonstrated how watersheds function using the EnviroScape model, and WET's ShoreCorps member, Malika Brown, facilitated an engaging tree identification activity.
Then it was time to get their hands dirty! With guidance from Mike Angelot, a Horizons volunteer and the community outreach coordinator for the WET-NAACP Waterside Park outreach restoration project, students placed watering bags on young trees and refreshed their mulch. These simple but essential steps will help the trees thrive through the dry summer months.
We’re proud to support the next generation of environmental stewards and look forward to future collaborations with Horizons Delmarva.
