Discovering the river based on observations and experiments.
Science is concerned with the discovery and description of the world around us based on observations and experiments.
The Wicomico River Science team members analyze the water samples and sample conditions collected by WET’s citizen scientists, aka Creekwatchers. Led by Salisbury University's Department of Biology, the science coordinator and their team measures concentrations of total nitrogen, total phosphorus, chlorophlly a, and bacteria. Site conditions recorded by Creekwatchers are assessed by scientists to determine water clarity. Scientific analysis are carefully conducted by trained scientists and experts and results are delivered to the public to inform decision-making. Supporting the Science Team is the Wicomico River Monitoring team members, known as the Wicomico Creekwatchers. Creekwatchers are citizen scientists trained to collect water samples and record site conditions. They are committed to sampling 22 sites in the Wicomico River Watershed beginning in March until November. Water quality can then be assessed by scientists to inform decisions made by residents, businesses, and local government. Those without a voice, wildlife and the natural environment, will thank you for your science reasoning. For further information or to volunteer in any of these capacities, contact Deborah Finkbeiner, Volunteer Coordinator at 440-880-3182 or email: creekwatchers@gmail.com |
